Pro Bowl and Super Bowl players have joined Mike Haynes team of Know your Stats about Prostate Cancer this week. NFL VIPs are converging for prostate screening tests sponsored by the NFL Player Care Fund. On the Know your Stats, website Mike has listed the luminaries on his team which include the sportscaster Chris Berman, Ray Lewis, Ron Woodson, Marv Levy, Joe Greene, Tony Dorsett, Len Dawson, and Andre Tippett. You can go to the On the Know your Stats website and take the Rank Your Risk questionnaire and see who else is on the Know Your Stats team.

As the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl players and coaches take their games seriously they are also here to sending a signal to the public that early detection is very serious when it comes to men’s health . Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Columbia Division of Urology has the best urologists in Florida to perform robotic surgery for prostate removal and every treatment for prostate cancer but a prostate cancer screening that catches your disease early gives you the chance of a better outcome. So talk to your doctor about getting your prostate cancer screening.

Hall of famer Mike Haynes, considered one of the NFL’s greatest defensive backs, has worn many hats and two different helmets (Patriots and Raiders) in his illustrious carrier with the NFL. Mike Haynes has put together a new team of NFL football all-stars. This week Mike Haynes, the NFL Player Care Foundation and the AUA are once again raising awareness about prostate cancer and the importance of prostate cancer screening by showing by example. Smack in the middle of this football crazed week here in South Florida, right between the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl, the NFL alumni and current players are having a prostate cancer screening. This Know Your Stats program has many aspects to it, which include informing the public on prostate cancer detection.

Our Miami urologist Dr Fernando Bianco will be performing the prostate cancer screening exams for the AUA and NFL Player Care Association. As the Chief of Robotic Surgery for Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach doctor Bianco knows the importance of early detection of prostate cancer. This includes starting a baseline blood test at the age of 40.

At 40 years of age you should get your prostate specific antigen (PSA) test done (a blood test) so that you have the amount of PSA that is in your blood to tract for the rest of your life. This very first PSA test is called your PSA baseline. As your life progresses, you will be able to compare the different PSA test results with your original baseline test. Watching the level of PSA in your blood is one of the determining factors that will help your urologist decide if you should have a prostate biopsy performed. Another aspect of your PSA levels that your doctor looks at is the rate that your PSA levels rise in each successive PSA test which is known as PSA velocity. Having a high PSA result can tip you off that there may be caner in your prostate. Prostate enlargement, prostatitis, aging, and even supplements can make your PSA numbers rise. That is why the American Urological Society AUA guidelines include many different factors that the urologists and their patients should look at before deciding to have a prostate biopsy. Some of the other indicators that are considered are a quick one minute digital rectal exam where the doctor uses his finger to feel the prostate to “see” if there are any nodules or unevenness to the prostate. Age is also taken into account along with family history, ethnicity, and medical history.

Mike Hayne’s “Know your Stats about Prostate Cancer ‘All-star team is full of the best stars in the history of the NFL, so in our next post, we will show you who they are. Of course this is Miami, and right now the best in the NFL are getting ready for the Pro Bowl kick off and the Miami urology team is off to watch the game.

Prostate cancer screening will be available Super Bowl week for NFL alumni and current National Football League players. This prostate cancer awareness program was started by the National Football League and the American Urological Association, and it is sponsored by the NFL Player Care Fund.

This year’s event should have a larger number of players attending the prostate cancer screening since the Pro Bowl is bringing the top players in the NFL to Miami the week before the Super Bowl. Many of the Pro Bowl players would love to have their family and friends stay in our South Florida paradise for a week to go to the big game.

Dr Fernando J Bianco the Chief of Robotic Surgery for the Columbia University Division of Urology at Mt Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach will be there performing the screening at this years event.

We will keep you posted each day on the developments of this Super Bowl XLIV kick off event as they unfold.

HDR (high dose rate) brachytherapy is performed at our Miami urology center at Mount Sinai Medical Center as an adjunct to shorter courses of external beam radiation therapy specifically for patients with localized but large or advanced cancers of the prostate gland.
This computer controlled technique enables us to deliver radiation dose more efficiently to the regions adjacent to the prostate gland while limiting exposure to the rectum and bladder. This treatment requires a brief in-hospital stay.
