Super Bowl prostate screening with Dr. Bianco of Miami Urology

The NFL players came to the Super Bowl prostate screening in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday from 10 am to 4 PM and Mount Sinai’s Dr  Bianco was there performing the exams and meeting the NFL players. Throughout the day NFL players came to participate in the Know Your Stats prostate screening program that was sponsored by the NFL Player Care Foundation during this year’s South Florida’s Super Bowl activities.

The atmosphere was relaxed and both the doctors and players had great facilities including possibly the largest exam room in the world (pictures of it in on our next post and you can decide). The Renaissance Fort Lauderdale Hotel was beautiful. The staff at the sign up table, the team drawing the samples for the PSA, and the technicians Manning the machines that were on working display that processed the samples within 10 minutes were all very chipper.

Doctors came from several areas of South Florida, to help out with the AUA’s and NFL”s prostate screening this year. Dr Bianco was having fun talking to the players, being interviewed for the newscasts, even meeting an old college friend that also became urologist. Dr Bianco was explaining about the new South Florida robotic center that he heads up for the Columbia University Division of Urology on Miami Beach and about his transitioning from  open and laparoscopic surgery to performing the da Vinci prostatectomy ((robotic prostate removal). Dr Bianco was explaining that by performing hundreds of robotic surgeries you become attuned to the nuances and advantages that the micro fine movements, 360 degree manipulation and the magnified 3D view offers. Dr Bianco also performs cystectomy (bladder removal), and nephrectomy (kidney removal) procedures with the daVinci robot.

So which team was the favorite to win the Super Bowl this Sunday at the prostate screening?

This Miami urology reporter was not surprised who the favorite was, since Miami is an AFC town. It shouldn’t take a Super Bowl for men to get their prostate screening, but it is a lot more fun.

Our Miami urologist Dr Fernando Bianco will be performing the prostate cancer screening exams for the AUA and NFL Player Care Association. As the Chief of Robotic Surgery for Columbia University Division of Urology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach doctor Bianco knows the importance of early detection of prostate cancer. This includes starting a baseline blood test at the age of 40.

At 40 years of age you should get your prostate specific antigen (PSA) test done (a blood test) so that you have the amount of PSA that is in your blood to tract for the rest of your life. This very first PSA test is called your PSA baseline. As your life progresses, you will be able to compare the different PSA test results with your original baseline test. Watching the level of PSA in your blood is one of the determining factors that will help your urologist decide if you should have a prostate biopsy performed. Another aspect of your PSA levels that your doctor looks at is the rate that your PSA levels rise in each successive PSA test which is known as PSA velocity. Having a high PSA result can tip you off that there may be caner in your prostate. Prostate enlargement, prostatitis, aging, and even supplements can make your PSA numbers rise. That is why the American Urological Society AUA guidelines include many different factors that the urologists and their patients should look at before deciding to have a prostate biopsy. Some of the other indicators that are considered are a quick one minute digital rectal exam where the doctor uses his finger to feel the prostate to “see” if there are any nodules or unevenness to the prostate. Age is also taken into account along with family history, ethnicity, and medical history.

This year’s event should have a larger number of players attending the prostate cancer screening since the Pro Bowl is bringing the top players in the NFL to Miami the week before the Super Bowl. Many of the Pro Bowl players would love to have their family and friends stay in our South Florida paradise for a week to go to the big game.

“My husband had radical prostatectomy in 2000. PSA levels remained below .001 until last week; now he has a level of 11.4. What is most likely cause?”

Answer:

“A PSA that has gone above 0.4 after radical prostatectomy is a concerning sign and may represent a cancer that has returned. Your husband needs to be evaluated by a urologist as soon as possible. Thank you.”
